She was mainly self-taught and began by exploring ``the flowers in her uncle Helliwell's garden'' when she was only six years old. Flowers became her ``true passion,'' and later, as a teacher, she spent her summers exploring the Rockies and its flowers. She ultimately became the curator of botany at the California Academy of Sciences and in 1950, at the age of 91, the honorary president of the Seventh International Botanical Congress held in Sweden. Readers will enjoy learning about this dedicated, pioneering botanist who was the only woman to be listed in ``every edition of American Men of Science.'' Turner's story is one of overcoming obstacles and prejudices as the only African-American in his college class, the first to serve on the faculty of his university, and the first to be elected a member of the St. Louis Academy of Science. Genuinely inspiring are the details of Turner's experiments on the web-building instinct and intelligence of spiders, the homing of ants, the color-blindness of bees. Charts, mazes, and diagrams shed light on Turner's approach as well as provide clear directions on how to replicate insect experiments, along with a list of supplies needed. From VOYA Chiura Obata's life as an artist began as a young boy in Japan in the late nineteenth century. There he received his training in the ancient art forms of ink and watercolor. He also began to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. He learned to quiet his mind and body to observe nature before beginning to paint it through intricate brushwork. This biography follows Obata, one of the first naturalists, as he moved from his homeland in Japan to California where he discovered beauty in even the most tragic events, such as the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Obata continued to grow as an artist as he started a family and began teaching at the University of California at Berkeley. Along with other friends such as Ansel Adams, he frequently journeyed to Yosemite National Park to capture its beauty on canvas, in clay, and in photographs. Obata continued this love of art even during his internment in a Japanese camp during World War II in the 1940s. This beautifully illustrated book also is filled with many activities for the young aspiring nature artist, such as instruction in how to draw clouds effectively, and Ross provides lists of materials for the young artist. This book is an excellent addition to the Naturalist's Apprentice series and should be of interest to any young reader who wants to learn more about artists and their techniques. On the creepiness scale, they are fairly benign; they're easy to identify; they neither sting nor bite; nor do they infest people's domiciles. For this entry in the Backyard Buddies series, Ross (Bug Watching with Charles Henry Turner, 1997, etc.) includes some good facts about ladybugs and their care, defining their scientific names and covering some ladybug lore. Sadly, the information that will intrigue readers is lost in a muddle of mediocre experiments and what reads as filler, e.g., writing down all there is to observe about a ladybug (``it's red'') may encourage scientific observation, but it may also strike some as busy work. From School Library Journal Two series entries that encourage kids to observe and inquire into the lives of some of our most commonly found creatures. Both books provide a great deal of scientific information, as do many other existing works. What makes these titles different is their aim to foster children's natural curiosity and get them to think about the world around them. Each book has a section in which elementary-school children pose questions such as "Do Caterpillars Get Dizzy?" and devise experiments to answer them. Some of the experiments prove to be inconclusive, but they still provide a solid grounding in the scientific method and encourage young readers to think for themselves. The books also provide suggestions of places, such as local nature groups, where children can obtain further information. Also included are instructions for capturing caterpillars and ladybugs for observation and a reminder to release them when the experiments are over. The books are visually appealing with clear texts and detailed drawings. Photos of kids with the insects add to the appeal. The information here is more than adequate for report needs but the books are also great for casual reading, and enterprising students might even find a few interesting science-project ideas. Unfortunately, there is no warning about the brown recluse spider, a small, retiring house spider whose bite can be as nasty as a black widow's (capable of "a painful bite," which in many cases is a real understatement). Colorful cartoon illustrations and diagrams enliven the texts, as do crisp, color photo close-ups of the critters and a crew of kids at work on their projects. The subject of this ingenious package is similar to that of Magnification (see above), but the approach here is hands-on, with a 5x lens included with the book. Using humorous language and oddball perspectives, expressing childlike curiosity, Ross explains how to operate a hand lens and thus enter a ``miniature realm, where a pebble can look like the moon.'' Nearly 60 different lessons lead to eye-popping observations: bird feathers are zippers, dragonfly wings are stained-glass windows, wild seeds are shaped like kayaks (he explains why), a dustball contains elements from other galaxies. Humans tapping maple trees seem mundane compared with amazing aphids stealing sap from plants. Lens-wielding sleuths will appreciate activity suggestions, for example, read the ``secret messages'' for bees inside flowers, goggle at slime and mucous, examine the rings of a worm's body, inspect pollen pillows and flower condominiums. The goal of my visiting author program is to entice children to write. My first book grew out of a challenge to write a kid's book about cycles, a topic that had not been written about before. I started drawing and writing, night after night for two months, and the book soon took shape. In my program I share this story and others, to illustrate how a book is made, step-by-step, from the hatching of an idea to selling it at a bookstore.

My props are the real stuff- letters from publishers, drafts of art and writing, a book galley, proofs, a press sheet, slides of book pages and the books themselves. I share works in progress and demonstrate how I draw my book characters. My 30 years experience working with students of all ages has made it very easy for me to adapt my assemblies and workshops to any age audience. I gladly modify my program to suit each school's needs.

When Michael is in Florida he is based out of Sarasota so he is particularly happy to visit schools in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and Bradenton/Sarasota/Venice region. For several day tours he is open to visiting any part of the state.

The program fee is $945 for three assemblies (plus travel expenses for visits that require an overnight stay). I offer a 10% discount when I visit more than one school in a region.

I also present an early childhood science in-service program for staff and parents based on my book, Sandbox Scientist.
