Michael Elsohn Ross is the award-winning author of the Happy Camper Handbook, Wormology, What’s the Matter in Mr. Whisker’s Room?, and Snug as a Bug. He lives at the entrance of Yosemite National Park, CA on a bluff overlooking the wild Merced River. Both his wife and his son Nick are poets and avid outdoors people. For over 30 years Michael has been teaching visitors to Yosemite about the plants, animals, and geology of the park. He leads classes and backpack trips for the Yosemite Association This work, as well as, his life-long interest in art and travel have inspired him to write over 40 books for young people.

Mr. Ross grew up in New York in a family of artists and started drawing cartoons in elementary school. He later used these cartooning skills to illustrate his first books. Since then his books have been illustrated by a variety of other illustrators including well-known artists such as Peter Parnall.

Michael's newest book is Mama’s Milk, a picture book celebration of the warm and loving bond between mammal mamas and their babies. Lushly illustrated by Ashley Wolff this lyrical book shows little ones doing what comes naturally: nursing.  (Tricycle Press, Spring 2007). Baby Bear isn’t Hungry, another new release, is the tale of a curious newborn cub and her misadventure. It’s illustrated by North Carolina artist Consie Powell in an eye-catching woodblock style. (Yosemite Association Fall 2006).

Mr. Ross loves visiting schools where he enjoys meeting young readers and writers who adore bugs, birds, yucky stuff, and books with a sense of humor.

Celebrating the warm and loving bond between mammal mamas and their babies, this lushly illustrated, lyrical book shows little ones doing what comes naturally: nursing. A perfect choice for cuddling up with a breast-feeding child or the older sibling who wonders how the new baby gets fed.

Editorial Reviews
" No matter the varying styles of feeding, one common denominator exists: a mother's milk sustains and nurtures her child. A final spread explains how long various animals nurse, as well as the benefits breastfeeding. An ode to all things maternal." Ages 6 mos.-3 yrs. Publisher's Weekly April 2007

“This cozy offering will be welcomed by parents who want to share the joy and naturalness of breastfeeding with their children". School Library Journal May 2007

“This homage to breast-feeding will give new parents both the "aawww, how sweet!" experience, with its paintings of all kinds of baby animals sucking mother's milk, as well as the "how cool is that?" experience. Who knew that the distinctly un-cozy armadillo nursed her young? Who knew that a baby platypus is called a "puggle"? How cute. How cool. LA Times May 2007

This is the delightful story of a baby black bear who is too curious to eat. Baby bear is completely fascinated by the natural world around her, and sees her surroundings as one big outdoor playground. Her mother urges her to stop and replenish herself, but baby bear doesn't have time. She is too busy falling in mud, swinging from trees, investigating insects, and wandering through the forest. Not paying attention to where she is going, baby bear tumbles down a hill and into an occupied campsite. It is hard to tell who is more alarmed, baby bear or the humans in whose camp she has found herself. What will become of baby bear? Will she ever be hungry?
Editorial Reviews
“Beautifully illustrated by Consie Powell, the pictures throughout Baby bear Isn’t Hungry tenderly convey Mama and Baby Bear’s relationship, perfectly capturing the inquisitiveness of the young bear cub and the nurturing mother/cub bond. With it’s gentle rhythm and pleasant rhyming text Baby bear Isn’t Hungry is a perfect bedtime story for little ones. BookMums March 2007”

Salvador Dali and the Surrealists: Their Lives and Ideas: 21 Activities by Michael Elsohn Ross Paperback: 144 pages ; Publisher: Chicago Review Press; (September 2003) 155652479X.01.LZZZZZZZ (40044 bytes)

The bizarre and often humorous creations of Ren Magritte, Joan Mir, Salvador Dal, and other surrealists are showcased in this activity guide for young artists. Foremost among the surrealists, Salvador Dal was a painter, filmmaker, designer, performance artist, and eccentric self-promoter. His famous icons, including the melting watches, double images, and everyday objects set in odd contexts, helped to define the way people view reality and encourage children to view the world in new ways. Dal's controversial life is explored while children trace the roots of some familiar modern images. These wild and wonderful activities include making Man Ray-inspired solar prints, filming a dreamscape video, writing surrealist poetry, making collages, and assembling art with found objects.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal Starred review Up-This visually stunning work enhances the body of material on the artist and his contemporaries. Eminently readable, the crisply written text is detailed and thorough, including pronunciations of many place and personal names. Dali's life is presented familiarly, drawing in many details of life as an artist during that period in Europe and the relationships among the surrealists. No actual dialogue is included, but conclusions are drawn about Dali's thoughts from historical evidence. Sidebars cover other artists (Miro Eluard, Picasso), styles (Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), and elements of history (the Spanish Civil War, Fascism and Franco, Communism). The attractive layout includes numerous excellent-quality reproductions of the work of Dali and many of the other artists mentioned in the text, and period photographs. Of particular interest here are the 21 activities that will engage budding artists and encourage them to think and to look at familiar objects in a different way. Requiring no unusual supplies, they might be used by classroom teachers as well. There are rich potentials for jumps from here to history and the "'20s in Europe" art era. A valuable addition to any collection. Cris Riedel, Ellis B. Hyde Elementary School, Dansville, NY Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From School Library Journal Lovely color photographs and an informative text document the Christmas season in Oaxaca, starting with the Fiesta of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 12 and ending with the Day of the Three Kings on January 6. Along the way, readers learn about Las Posadas (reenactments of Mary and Joseph's search for an inn), nacimientos (manger scenes), an amazing custom of carving elaborate figures out of radishes, and much more. The photos, featuring families in their homes and communities, are bordered with bright designs, as are many of the pages. A glossary of the Spanish words in the text with pronunciation guide and a recipe for buuelos are appended. This fun and informative book should find a wide readership.

From Booklist "Each day you ride on a slowly spinning planet Earth from day to night and back again." In clear language suitable for beginning readers, this explains the Earth's cycles of rotation, which cause the shifts between day and night and the seasons, as well as the moon's varying shape. Straightforward, realistic watercolor illustrations alternate between scenes of seasonal activity on Earth (riding a bike, raking leaves, sledding) and powerful, deep blue spreads of outer space. Direct, simple, and ideal for classroom support, this appealing introduction to Earth's movement remains narrowly focused on its topic, ... Gillian Engberg Copyright American Library Association. From School Library Journal   In easy-to-read but expressive language, the author explains how different cycles result in day and night and changes in time and seasons on Earth. Attractive watercolor paintings enhance the text. The uncluttered pages, many with white type on dark-blue backgrounds, will be inviting to young readers. From School Library Journal  This basic introduction talks about the workings of the human body. The section "Body Repair Cycles" connects energy gained from food with the replacement of skin, fingernails, and hair; "Breath Cycles" tells about the uses of life-giving oxygen; and "The Blood Cycle" describes how both food energy and oxygen are pumped from the heart around the body and back again. Moore's watercolors, which feature pinks, blues, and purples and washed-out skin tones, show children engaged in activity; the section on blood has simplistic diagrams of the inner organs, some superimposed on the figures. From Booklist  This final book in a four-part series (Life Cycles, Earth Cycles, and Body Cycles) focuses on patterns in nature. Children will discover how soil is recycled by following a seedling as it grows into a tree, which eventually falls down and decays, adding richness to the soil and readying it for new seedlings to sprout. They'll learn about the hydrologic cycle during which a drop of water from the sky joins other drops to form a trickling stream that eventually finds its way to the ocean. Then each day water drops evaporate, float up into clouds, where they are chilled by cold air, and fall to earth as rain. Ross also explains how people can help nature's recycling processes--by taking paper and plastic to recycling centers or by making a compost pile. Fact boxes add more information and a generous assortment of color illustrations, both full-page spreads and margin drawings, clearly illustrate the processes under discussion. Editorial Reviews
From Kirkus Reviews An entry in the new Naturalist's Apprentice biographies that lovingly presents the life of botanist Alice Eastwood (18591953), who explored plant life in Colorado and California at the turn of the century. She was mainly self-taught and began by exploring ``the flowers in her uncle Helliwell's garden'' when she was only six years old. Flowers became her ``true passion,'' and later, as a teacher, she spent her summers exploring the Rockies and its flowers. She ultimately became the curator of botany at the California Academy of Sciences and in 1950, at the age of 91, the honorary president of the Seventh International Botanical Congress held in Sweden. Readers will enjoy learning about this dedicated, pioneering botanist who was the only woman to be listed in ``every edition of American Men of Science.'' Beautifully painted watercolors make this book particularly pleasing to pore over, as do the well-placed activities for budding botanists on choosing a field guide, using a magnifying lens, keeping a botanical journal, and more. From Kirkus Reviews Starred Review- December 1997
A well-researched biography of a lesser-known scientist, complete with project ideas that extend the book's usefulness. In the same format as Flower Watching (p. 1712), this entry in the Naturalist's Apprentice series combines biographical information--this time on the life and work of entomologist Charles Henry Turner (18671823)--with tips and activities, all expertly illustrated by Caple. Turner's story is one of overcoming obstacles and prejudices as the only African-American in his college class, the first to serve on the faculty of his university, and the first to be elected a member of the St. Louis Academy of Science. Genuinely inspiring are the details of Turner's experiments on the web-building instinct and intelligence of spiders, the homing of ants, the color-blindness of bees. Charts, mazes, and diagrams shed light on Turner's approach as well as provide clear directions on how to replicate insect experiments, along with a list of supplies needed. Insect enthusiasts can investigate whether bees can tell time by setting up a flower schedule and can test the learning abilities of cockroaches and caterpillars by observing them in a maze constructed of building blocks. Bugs are distinguished from insects at the outset, and precise drawings and insets offer background information on the specific subjects of Turner's studies. Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal In this sparkling addition to a lively series, Ross presents a bright, readable, up-to-the-minute biography of a pioneer and respected expert in the field of ichthyology. The well-organized text is illustrated with a number of somewhat unpretentious black-and-white and full-color photos, but they are almost eclipsed by Smith's colorful drawings of a wide variety of fish mentioned in Clark's studies. Equally engaging information boxes are liberally scattered throughout, dealing with such diverse topics as fish "swimsuits," ichthyological "spying," and a pair of experiments. From School Library Journal A unique combination of biography and natural history. At a time when there were few women role models, Ann Haven Morgan (1882-1966) followed her childhood interest in the natural world and became a respected professor and author. Her first book, Field Book of Ponds and Streams, was published in 1930. Her education and life's work are presented chronologically and accompanied by a few archival photographs. The book also serves as a field guide, with text boxes on almost every page introducing aspects of pond ecology. Various examples of pond dwellers, such as dragonflies and mayflies, which Morgan spent years studying, are briefly described and depicted. The photographs and full-color illustrations amplify the text.-Frances E. Millhouser, Chantilly Regional Library, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From VOYA   Chiura Obata's life as an artist began as a young boy in Japan in the late nineteenth century. There he received his training in the ancient art forms of ink and watercolor. He also began to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. He learned to quiet his mind and body to observe nature before beginning to paint it through intricate brushwork. This biography follows Obata, one of the first naturalists, as he moved from his homeland in Japan to California where he discovered beauty in even the most tragic events, such as the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Obata continued to grow as an artist as he started a family and began teaching at the University of California at Berkeley. Along with other friends such as Ansel Adams, he frequently journeyed to Yosemite National Park to capture its beauty on canvas, in clay, and in photographs. Obata continued this love of art even during his internment in a Japanese camp during World War II in the 1940s. This beautifully illustrated book also is filled with many activities for the young aspiring nature artist, such as instruction in how to draw clouds effectively, and Ross provides lists of materials for the young artist. This book is an excellent addition to the Naturalist's Apprentice series and should be of interest to any young reader who wants to learn more about artists and their techniques. VOYA CODES:

Editorial Reviews
From Kirkus Reviews Ladybugs are the perfect bug for a pet. On the creepiness scale, they are fairly benign; they're easy to identify; they neither sting nor bite; nor do they infest people's domiciles. For this entry in the Backyard Buddies series, Ross (Bug Watching with Charles Henry Turner, 1997, etc.) includes some good facts about ladybugs and their care, defining their scientific names and covering some ladybug lore. Sadly, the information that will intrigue readers is lost in a muddle of mediocre experiments and what reads as filler, e.g., writing down all there is to observe about a ladybug (``it's red'') may encourage scientific observation, but it may also strike some as busy work. The full- color photographs are helpful; the illustrations are sometimes informative, and other times clumsily executed cartoons. Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal  Two series entries that encourage kids to observe and inquire into the lives of some of our most commonly found creatures. Both books provide a great deal of scientific information, as do many other existing works. What makes these titles different is their aim to foster children's natural curiosity and get them to think about the world around them. Each book has a section in which elementary-school children pose questions such as "Do Caterpillars Get Dizzy?" and devise experiments to answer them. Some of the experiments prove to be inconclusive, but they still provide a solid grounding in the scientific method and encourage young readers to think for themselves. The books also provide suggestions of places, such as local nature groups, where children can obtain further information. Also included are instructions for capturing caterpillars and ladybugs for observation and a reminder to release them when the experiments are over. The books are visually appealing with clear texts and detailed drawings. Photos of kids with the insects add to the appeal. The information here is more than adequate for report needs but the books are also great for casual reading, and enterprising students might even find a few interesting science-project ideas. Good (and slightly different) additions to natural history sections. Arwen Marshall, New York Public Library Copyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal  Both of these titles present a complete study/investigation program including suggestions for housing and care of the featured creature, scrutiny of behaviors, and experiments, all requiring careful observation, note taking and measurement, and subsequent deductions from acquired data. Unfortunately, there is no warning about the brown recluse spider, a small, retiring house spider whose bite can be as nasty as a black widow's (capable of "a painful bite," which in many cases is a real understatement). Colorful cartoon illustrations and diagrams enliven the texts, as do crisp, color photo close-ups of the critters and a crew of kids at work on their projects. These books will be enthusiastically received by students and teachers alike, and there's a lot to be absorbed about both the creatures and the scientific method of investigation.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

A guide to early childhood science
Notable Children's book 1995 Smithsonian Magazine

Editorial Reviews
From Booklist  Ross presents ideas for letting young children explore science freely, through play. Each chapter in the book contains a number of activities related to a theme such as light, water, or building. Ross discusses the materials, the setup, and the science behind each one, as well as recalling the experiences and reactions of children doing that activity. Humorous drawings in a bold "retro" style appear throughout the book, but their purpose is mainly decorative. Preschool and primary-grade teachers and parents will find this an upbeat, practical guide to science activities for young children. Carolyn Phelan

From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers Weekly
The subject of this ingenious package is similar to that of Magnification (see above), but the approach here is hands-on, with a 5x lens included with the book. Using humorous language and oddball perspectives, expressing childlike curiosity, Ross explains how to operate a hand lens and thus enter a ``miniature realm, where a pebble can look like the moon.'' Nearly 60 different lessons lead to eye-popping observations: bird feathers are zippers, dragonfly wings are stained-glass windows, wild seeds are shaped like kayaks (he explains why), a dustball contains elements from other galaxies. Humans tapping maple trees seem mundane compared with amazing aphids stealing sap from plants. Lens-wielding sleuths will appreciate activity suggestions, for example, read the ``secret messages'' for bees inside flowers, goggle at slime and mucous, examine the rings of a worm's body, inspect pollen pillows and flower condominiums. Ross ably balances fun facts with probing questions. Of interest to science lovers as well as those who snooze through textbook science, this book is a source of entertainment and reference that could keep some enthusiasts busy for years. Its sturdy construction ensures a long, durable life. Ages 7-up. (May)

Become a Bird and Fly! by Michael Elsohn Ross, Peter Parnall (Illustrator) Reading level: Ages 4-8 Edition: Library Binding 32 pages;Publisher: Millbrook Press; (November 1992)
ASIN: 1562940740 order.gif (1197 bytes) 94X32-W-LOGO.GIF (1338 bytes)

From Jim Jeske - BookList Ross and Parnall create an enchanting story of a boy who wants so badly to fly that he imagines himself transformed into a pelican. Aided in his visualization of the change process by his neighbor, Avis, Nicky imagines his clothes becoming feathers, his fat melting away and bones filling with air, his hair vanishing, and his jaws distending into a long beak. Before long, he is soaring gloriously into a sunlit sky. When at last he comes to rest, he continues to dream of the experience until he awakens to find his hand clutching a broad white feather. As an example of a boy's imagination making a desire real, Ross and Parnall's story is exhilarating and powerful. Smooth and flowing lines shaping the images of Nicky, Avis, and the majestic contours of the pelican suggest air currents in motion, while the soft hues of gold, green, and sky blue nicely offset the illustrations' predominant white. Yet the cool lightness of Parnall's abstract drawings might not immediately appeal to children under age six, who may have a lot of questions about what exactly is happening. However, booktalking and discussion should provoke thought among readers in the primary grades. A tribute to the power of imagination and the beauty of wildlife.

Presentations dog.jpg (14718 bytes)
The goal of my visiting author program is to entice children to write. My first book grew out of a challenge to write a kid's book about cycles, a topic that had not been written about before. I started drawing and writing, night after night for two months, and the book soon took shape. In my program I share this story and others, to illustrate how a book is made, step-by-step, from the hatching of an idea to selling it at a bookstore.

My props are the real stuff- letters from publishers, drafts of art and writing, a book galley, proofs, a press sheet, slides of book pages and the books themselves. I share works in progress and demonstrate how I draw my book characters. My 30 years experience working with students of all ages has made it very easy for me to adapt my assemblies and workshops to any age audience. I gladly modify my program to suit each school's needs.

When Michael is in Florida he is based out of Sarasota so he is particularly happy to visit schools in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area and Bradenton/Sarasota/Venice region. For several day tours he is open to visiting any part of the state.

The program fee is $945 for three assemblies (plus travel expenses for visits that require an overnight stay). I offer a 10% discount when I visit more than one school in a region.

I also present an early childhood science in-service program for staff and parents based on my book, Sandbox Scientist.

New! Art workshops for teachers and students based on Salvador Dal and the Surrealists.

Endorsements from Schools

On the day of his visit, Michael gave 4 unique presentations to 4 different groups of students, with each presentation being age-appropriate. This differentiation resulted in attentive, engaged students, and even resulted in hugs from the kindergartners! He is a well-educated speaker on topics ranging from bugs to biographies. We truly enjoyed his visit. Andi Johnson, Excel Academy, Arvada, CO May 2007

"Michael Elsohn Ross presented at the Mountain Brook Writers’ Festival. His presentation opened our students’ eyes, as well as those of our teachers, to the world around us. During his visit, we were given the opportunity to learn about his writing style, process, and success. We also loved seeing his illustrations! The K-6 students were given time to read and share many of Ross’ works before, during, and after his visit. It was our great pleasure to have Michael Ross at Cherokee Bend." Beth Shea Cherokee Bend School Mountain Brook, AL March, 2007

"Michael Ross’ very engaging and knowledgeable assemblies were perfect for both our English and Spanish speaking students. Several of our teachers commented that Michael was wonderful about adjusting his presentations so that he spoke age appropriately. Hands-down, he was wonderful! Our students enjoyed his humorous stories from his childhood, as well as his funny drawings, and his hilarious camp songs. He also was one of our featured authors at the Oregon Educational Media Association’s annual Fall Conference, and was quite successful!"
Libby Hamler-Dupras and De Ann Orand Myers Elementary Library Media Center   Salem, OR October 20, 2006

"Mr. Ross is an excellent visiting author!  He related to all grade levels from Pre-K to 5th grade.  The kids were so excited about a real author who made science fun and interesting.  The teachers were inspired by his ability to relate and integrate science into the curriculum.   Mr. Ross was organized and willing to be flexible with scheduling all day!  He sold lots of books too!  Yes!  What a joy to have an easygoing, interesting, and knowledgeable presenter." Stephanie Parker, librarian Bushland Elementary Bushland, TX March 2006

"The program was very unique in tying science with reading and artwork! A thoroughly enjoyable assembly". Phyllis Pope Glynn Archer Elementary Key West FL November 2005

“Even months after his author's visit, students show lasting enthusiasm for Michael Ross, and his books.  Book circulation and enjoyment for science still prevail as students explore backyard buddies and science lab projects through both independent study and class activities.  Michael Ross' knowledge, easy manner and flexibility to deal with unexpected difficulties brought wide approval from staff and students. His multimedia presentation made a clear connection between science and the writing process. The Sandbox Scientist workshop was a perfect vehicle to help enhance an integrated science program.  We greatly appreciate Michael sharing his time with our students and staff, our only regret is there was not time to fully explore his diverse and fascinating background.”
The Elementary Librarians of Stillwater Public Schools
