Josephine Nobisso's first story appeared in a national magazine when she was 18. Since then, she has published over forty books, mostly for children, but also for adults, including three pseudonymous novels. She regularly publishes articles about writing, and her greatest authorial pride lies in having been acknowledged in six books by fellow authors. Each year, to rave evaluations. Miss Nobisso conducts about 100 workshops in "The Nobisso Recommendations: Guiding Students to Write in Their Authentic Voices," part of which comes to life in Show; Don't Tell! Secrets of Writing.

The author received teaching certification from SUNY New Paltz, and studied languages in Urbino, Italy, and in France and Austria. She is fluent in Italian, and often translates others' work from that language. The National Catholic Educational Association named her "Distinguished Graduate," and Delta Kappa Gamma—the international society of honored teachers— named her "Friend of Education," for "someone outside the profession who has worked significantly toward improving the educational opportunities of others, and who has given outstanding service to promoting quality education."

Miss Nobisso has been a long-standing member of The Author's Guild and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and was the co-founder of the Long Island Children's Writers and Illustrators group. In 2004, Miss Nobisso was appointed to the American Library Association-Children's Book Council joint committee. She regularly conducts staff development workshops and is a speaker at commencements, college courses, and conferences in the USA and abroad. Among the very many honors that Miss Nobisso books have received are 6 awards for Show; Don't Tell! Secrets of Writing: the Global Learning Initiative Award for "The Best Trade Book with Educational Application"- a singular citation jointly administered by the Association of Education Publishers and the Bologna Children's Book Fair-the International Reading Association/Children's Book Council "Children's Choice Award," an American Booksellers Association BookSense "Pick of the Lists" citation, a Parents' Choice Award, a National Parenting Publications Award, and was a ForeWord
Magazine Book of the Year Finalist.

Born February 9, 1953, in the Bronx, Miss Nobisso is a wife and a mother who homeschooled her daughter, Maria Nicotra, the Art Director of Gingerbread House, the press they founded together. Miss Nobisso and her family live in Westhampton Beach, on the East End of Long Island.

A scrapbook of memorabilia chronicles the tender and sometimes zany moments shared between Grandma and her granddaughter during their seaside summers. Pages of the lively scrapbook are interspersed with watercolor-rendered photographs of the girl, now a teenager, as she reminisces about their relationship. The last summer in the scrapbook reveals how their roles have changed. Now the girl guides Grandma's wheelchair to places Grandma once brought her on the back of her bike or in a stroller. This poignant story uplifts and dignifies the experience of aging and loss, tingeing it not with sadness, but with hope and wonder.

No one in the world can resist a great big yawn, especially when it comes from the sleepy moon herself. From the first yawn of the night, beginning "with a baby's tiny mouth wrapped around it," and moving on to the baby's mother, the family dog, children in countries far away, and even the moon, nighttime overcomes the planet, village by city, hemisphere by hemisphere.

Set in the Bronx during the 1950's, when postwar immigrant children were placed in their first American classrooms, this delightful story tells of the riotous linguistic misunderstandings of Josephine's first day of school. The daughter of savvy Italian engineers, Josephine has lived in the city long enough to have learned a few words in English, but is overcome when her teacher makes her stand up in front of the class and tell about her life in Italy-in English, of course. The result is a charming tale of adventures and multicultural miscommunications as Josephine attempts to make herself understood. Children will come to understand that sometimes people underestimate the talents and dignity of newcomers to the United States and will embark on a poignant journey as Josephine tells her incredible story the best way she knows how and attempts to understand her English-speaking teacher and classmates.

The Weight of a Mass A Tale of Faith

by Josephine Nobisso (Author) , Katalin Szegedi (Illustrator) Reading level: Ages 4-8 Hardcover: 32 pages Publisher: Gingerbread House (September 30, 2005)

ISBN-10: 081462930X ISBN-13: 978-0814629307

When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king's wedding mass as payment for the baker's generosity. The baker writes "One Mass" on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town's surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a mass. Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal This gentle tale celebrates the power of the Mass in the Roman Catholic faith. The text, which was inspired by an actual event recounted by a priest in Luxembourg, is written in a lilting, storytelling style and teaches its lesson sweetly. Double-page spreads of warm-toned watercolors are filled with swirling action and show charming, doll-like people in Victorian dress. The Numbers Dance, A Counting Comedy

by Josephine Nobisso (Author) and Dasha Ziborova Eva Montanari (Illustrator) Reading level: Ages 4-8 Paperback: 32 pages Publisher: Gingerbread House (September 28, 2005)

ISBN-10: 0940112124 ISBN-13: 978-0940112124

Twirling and whirling, zigging and zagging, numerals dance across the pages, enticing children to play with numbers and develop a better understanding of numeric values in this fun and informative comic approach. Three groups of numerals make mightily concerted attempts to maintain the quirks of their distinct personalities in the face of persistent peer pressure. The irascible 1, 2, 3, and 4, though frail and wiry, would like to impose their ballroom dance style on the robust 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. 5 and 6 cannot help reverting to raucous jazz dancing, no matter how hard they sportingly try to conform, and 7–10 don't see the point of being anything but what they truly are—western line dancers. Scuffles, rumbles, round-ups, and coercions ensue until 1–4 have their way and 5–10 "go back to dancing like they want to, again!" The book's rousing, impeccably-metered rhymes provide the cadence of each dance style, and the spare accompanying art lends a clean energy to the numerals' challenge to accept each other as they are.

Take It to the Queen, A Tale of Hope
by Josephine Nobisso(Author), Katalin Szegedi (Illustrator) Reading level: Ages 4-8 Hardcover: 32 pages Publisher: Gingerbread House, 2008

ISBN-10: 0814632882 ISBN-13: 978-0814632888

With exquisite artwork and evocative text, this original fable explores the events of Jesus' life, and demonstrates the role of the Virgin Mary as the benevolent agent of God's people. Reduced to desolation by a king and prince who feel they have been wronged, the residents of a once-favored village must seek help from the queen, a native of their devastated town. Religious subjects are presented clearly in an allegorical style that proves entertaining, and also serves to provide children with examples of virtue and good behavior.

Presentations

Josephine offers two types of programming, but often create custom-tailored sessions:
1.) a writing workshop (for either children or staff)
2.) an author presentation
Josephine explains her program below!

The Writing Workshop
("The Nobisso Recommendations: Guiding Students to Write in Their Authentic Voices")
is a class-by-class, roll-up-your-sleeves educational program, using my copyrighted method. (My book based on this program.

Show: Don't Tell! Secrets of Writing is being released this year.) The precept of the program are sound and grammar-based, and they supply innovative techniques that help writers use sense memory and imagination to "show and not tell" every time- whether they are writing fiction or non.

It begins with an off-handed moment of diagnostic (so that I have a point of departure), and proceeds with fun games, proofs and experiments (the main one of which uses any snack food), that reveal the program's strategic points. This takes about an hour with grades 4-6, a little less with the younger children. (The same tips apply for pre-writers- for whom we take child-dictation, aspirants, and even professionals!)

The school need not prepare in any special way for this program, and I bring all materials. I usually conduct only 2 of these each day since they are very strenuous. I would need a nice 15 minute buffer between classes, just to be sure we've brought it to closure. I encourage anyone on the faculty or any interested parent to come observe so that they may pick up tips, questioning patterns, etc.

Author Presentation
("An Encounter with a Celebrated Author")
is an ever-changing highly-visual program showing my  life, family, influences, obstacles to artistic success, illustrators, and work. It highlights the fact that English was not my family's first language, too. The children view pictures of me at all ages, and I read from my books, taking questions and answers throughout. This lasts from 30 to 60 minutes, depending upon the ages of the students. (I have created 7 age-and-interest-appropriate shows.)

The size of the audience for these assemblies is "to capacity". I request only an area that can be darkened, a screen, and a microphone (if you think it necessary.) I bring all other equipment. I can conduct up to 3 assemblies per day, but most schools need only 2, one for grades K-2, and one for 3-6.

Booking Tips:
Most schools have me do 2 Author's Presentations for all the children, and then target one grade level for the Writing Workshops:
     1. usually conduct 2 assemblies per day, or
     2. workshops per day.

I can also: conduct one presentation and two workshops in one day, or 2 assemblies and one workshop, or on rare occasions, and only if I can spend the night, 3 workshops in a day (they are truly too intense and intensive to do more!)

Some schools have me do Author's Presentations for the whole school and then a staff development workshop for teachers at a faculty meeting or a staff development day.

My Book Ordering Kit is easy to use, and most schools do make books available for sale to the students' families. I provide the kit, which asks that books ordered from all my publishers be sent directly to me so that the school does not have to deal with all the sorting of orders, etc. In my office, I personalize each book, autograph it, apply any stickers, insert any bookmarks, etc. if there are any available at the moment, and return the books to the school on the day of our event, all collated and packaged by classroom teacher. Straggler orders on any books published by Gingerbread House present no problem at all, since that is my own press, and we always bring extras.

As far as availability goes, my writing program is in very high demand on Long Island before the English Language Assessment test begins here in New York State. Many schools have me in for a shot of iron before this standardized test (though I do NOT teach for the test.) We can always find days, however, so please contact me when you can so that we may find mutually convenient dates.

Fees:
I charge by the session, so that schools may configure them as they please. For sessions not on Long Island, I charge $700 each, with a minimum of two relatively back-to-back sessions. The booking school is responsible for travel, lodging, and meal expenses. Travel  may be in the form of a per-mile driving cost. My daughter, Maria Nicotra, often accompanies me as my assistant, but I cover her expenses myself. I donate a set of autographed books to the school library, which I send in advance.

To help offset the costs of bringing an author in, most schools order my books at the generous discounts offered by the publishers, and then add some small amount to the offered price, effectively using the book order as a kind of fund-raising. Some schools find that this pays for the programs entirely.

I'm in and out of the office, but T check email regularly. If you'd like to chat, please call me at 631 288-5119, or email Joi@JosephineNobisso.com.  It Would be my pleasure to speak with you.

Thank you for your kind interest in my award-winning programs. I'm sure we can work together to fill the school's needs, bringing in valuable and engrossing programming for the children!
