Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
...The colorful and detailed cartoon illustrations call to mind the work of Michael Martchenko. The riddles are printed on what is designed to look like loose-leaf sheets that are then incorporated into the larger pictures. The text and illustrations reinforce the atmosphere of learning while having fun, and the book works well as a read-aloud and for independent reading.-Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist
Lewis, author of Arithme-Tickle (2002), offers a new collection of 18 riddles in verse, all inspired by science. Remkiewicz adds energetic art with zippy colors and accessible wit. The large, colorful illustrations often suggest the riddles' answers. Indeed, some of the verses would be difficult to solve without the visual hints. . . Horrible Harry in Room 2B (Paperback)

by Suzy Kline (Author) Frank Remkiewicz (Illustrator)

Reading level: Ages 9-12 Paperback: 64 pages Publisher: Puffin (May 1, 1997)

ISBN-10: 0140385525 ISBN-13: 978-0140385526

Horrible Harry Bugs the Three Bears

by Suzy Kline (Author) Frank Remkiewicz (Illustrator)
Reading level: Ages 4-8 Paperback: 80 pages Publisher: Puffin; Reprint edition (April 30, 2009)

ISBN-10: 0142412953 ISBN-13: 978-0142412954

Horrible Harry has always loved insects, especially digging in the dirt for them. And, recently, he’s discovered a new favorite: earwigs! But when he tries to tell his friends about these critters, only Song Lee listens. So when Miss Mackle assigns groups in Room 3B to act out different fairy tales, Harry sees an opportunity to teach the class about his favorite bug. Will they think his play is hilarious…or horrible?

Editorial Review

From Booklist Since his debut in Horrible Harry in Room 2B (1988), Harry has shown an affinity for horrible things, such as snakes and insects. This latest chapter book combines Harry’s love of bugs with a group assignment to act out a fairy tale. Harry unearths a dead earwig, names him Edward, and gives him a proper burial. In Edward’s honor, Harry’s group dramatizes an original fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bugs. Kline helpfully provides their short play script with the story. Not many series reach the 20-year mark, but this one is still going strong. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

New For 2009

Down by the Station

by Jennifer Riggs Vetter (Author), Frank Remkiewicz (Illustrator) Reading level: Baby-Preschool Hardcover: 32 pages Publisher: Tricycle Press (April 14, 2009)

ISBN-10: 1582462437 ISBN-13: 978-1582462431

Down by the depot, early in the morning
See the yellow school buses all in a row
See the school bus driver warming up the engine
Vroom vroom beep beep! Off we go!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist This version of the classic children’s song expands the traditional rhyme by featuring a variety of modes of transportation, not just the “little puffer-bellies.” Beginning with the traditional “down by the station, early in the morning,” readers are introduced to different vehicles on each two-page spread. School buses, tractor trailers, excavators, jumbo jets, sailboats, race cars, fire engines, and rocket boosters are all highlighted with an original four-stanza rhyme. Each rhyme works well with the original cadence that many parents, teachers, librarians, and youngsters are familiar with. For example, “Down by the water / Early in the morning / See the bobbing sailboats all in a row / See the salty skipper pulling up the mainsail. / Flap flap splash splash! Off we go!” Remkiewicz’s lively watercolor illustrations add energy to the rhymes, and storytimes, preschools, and kindergarten classrooms will be requesting this title, as will budding transportation enthusiasts.
